Distribution Substation Program 2023

We’re upgrading sixteen substations across our network to support the uptake of domestic rooftop solar, electric vehicles and other new energy solutions and to maintain a reliable and affordable supply of electricity for customers.

Due to growth in electricity demand across Melbourne’s south-eastern suburbs and Mornington Peninsula as a result of a growing population and household electrification, we’ve identified 16 substations that require upgrades.

To maintain a stable supply of power for more than 2000 customers, we’re increasing the capacity of these substations.

As well as upgrading overhead and underground circuits. Six of these substations will be upgraded to 500KvA, with six more upgraded to 315KvA.

We identified these sites last summer when peak demand is at its highest, using data to examine the network and find substations and circuits that are reaching their capacity.

We’ve chosen locations that will see the most benefit from an increase in capacity during peak demand over summer when power demand is at its highest – for example on hot summer days.

These works will prevent outages due to overloaded substations, improving the reliability of the network.

These works are part of our ongoing commitment to ensure the reliable supply of power to all customers within the network, with works beginning in September and expected to be completed by the end of November 2023.
