Safety during a storm event

  • Stay clear of any fallen powerlines and ensure they are reported to UED immediately on the electrical faults and emergencies number above.
  • If you notice any other such hazards such a branches lying across power lines, maintain a safe distance and ensure you report the fault.
  • Make sure your children and pets are indoors during storm activity.
  • Park your car under cover and away from trees. Fallen limbs can cause extensive damage to vehicles. Be aware that trees have been very stressed due to the prolonged drought conditions.
  • If you are outdoors during storm or wind activity, find a solid structure to shelter under.
  • If you experience a power outage use battery operated lanterns instead of candles. If you must use candles, ensure they are in a fire-proof holder and never leave them unattended.
  • If you are without power, ensure that all household appliances are switched off before power is returned. Further information is available via www.ses.vic.gov.au

During a large storm event you may experience difficulty reporting your power outage to our Faults and Emergency numbers. At this time we simply need your name and address details so that we can ensure your fault is logged for attention. Until we have been able to send a crew to investigate it is unlikely that we will be able to provide any information regarding restoration times and we appreciate your assistance in enabling us to handle the calls as quickly as possible. As the crews attend the faults they enable us to update both our recorded messages and the website, with up to date information regarding expected restoration times.

Restoration process

  • The restoration of power starts with the largest infrastructure proceeding in an orderly manner outwards to restore power at individual premises.
  • This process ensures the quickest and safest restoration of the network for all customers
  • UED crews must first assess damage to the network including substations, transformers, and wires to determine corrective actions. Safety is the number one priority for both the public and our crews.
  • Substations must be restored first to enable power to be delivered to local area, the restoration of feeder lines that serve large numbers of customers is completed next, followed by lines serving neighbourhoods.
  • Individual services that are often the most time consuming repairs, are restored as quickly as possible once all other infrastructure has been repaired.
