The UE emergency response plan is activated during widespread loss of power that can occur during extreme weather events such as storms or heatwaves. Our number one priority at all times is the safety of the community and our workers. We aim to reconnect electricity to everyone as soon as we safely can. During emergency events, an assessment of the damage is made and repairs are prioritised to ensure those most in need, such as hospitals, are returned to power first.
How you can prepare for an emergency
- Keep torches and lanterns readily accessible with fresh batteries.
- Have access to a phone that doesn’t need electricity, such as a mobile phone or phone with a cord (rather than a cordless phone).
- Have your mobile phone charged and, where possible, activate internet capabilities.
- Keep a battery-powered radio for news and updates on weather conditions and power outages.
- Business customers need to ensure mitigation plans are up-to-date and ready to be activated.
- Update your safety and maintenance plans (for properties in bushfire areas and/or properties with private overhead electric lines).
- If using a portable generator, plug appliances only into the outlets provided on the generator. Do NOT attempt to connect the generator to your house wiring.
What to do if you lose power during an emergency
- Check your neighbour’s house to see if they also have lost power. If their power is on, check to see if your safety switch (in your meter box) has been tripped. If you are not confident doing this yourself, please contact UE on 132 099 or seek help from a neighbour or friend.
- If you know any neighbours who are elderly or sick, check to see if they need help.
- Keep clear of fallen powerlines. Fallen powerlines should always be treated as live and dangerous so contact us as soon as possible on 132 099.
- After ensuring all lights/appliances are switched off, leave one light switched on so you know when the power comes back on.
- In a life threatening situation, call 000.
